KP Chan Portrait

I joined Hang Seng Bank as a trainee back in 1974 and left as the Assistant General Manager and Head of Insurance in May 2005. During these 31 years, I grew together with Hang Seng Bank.

A new chapter of my career began in June of the same year. I became the Chief Executive of the Munich Reinsurance Company Hong Kong Branch, the first local Chief Executive since the establishment of the branch in 1962.

Like my fellow citizens of Hong Kong, the territory is my home. I am thankful for the many precious opportunities this big family has given me to grow and progress in my career. Therefore, since 1995, I have been actively serving the insurance industry and also on public bodies.

To further contribute to society, I stood for the 2008 Legislative Council election to represent the Insurance Constituency with a view to speaking for the industry as well as Hong Kong at large. I was fortunate enough to be elected and became a legislator.

Many people may ask: What is the most important investment in life? I would say health. For over 10 years, I have been abiding to four rules of longevity. My first rule is daily breakfast of oatmeal with a mixture of yellow bean and black bean beverage. My second rule is to consume a variety of fruits everyday. My third rule is always trying to go to bed by 11 at night. My last rule is running three times a week for at least 30 minutes.

Nowadays, many people before the age of 50 would give up their health in exchange for a paycheck, yet after 50, spend all they have earned to regain their health.

Apart from health, in my view, family is also an important asset in life. In Hong Kong, both work and life are tough. Wage earners are working long hours and overtime even on holidays to earn a living. Work and life are grossly imbalanced.

When I was young, I knuckled down like all of you. As I am getting older, I miss the days spent watching my children growing up. When I try to recall those days recently, I could not find too many clippings in my memories. I have to fall back on my wife to recall memento moments in the upbringing of our two sons that I might have missed. I come to realize that these experiences are real treasures in life and that there are other things to cherish than career.

It is my wish to help change the social trend through working in the legislature. It is also my wish that wage earners would enjoy the culture of balanced work and life, have a harmonious family, live a plural life and also actively participate in public services and volunteer work.

From my experience in public services, one would enrich his or her knowledge and global perspective along with his or her social network while contributing to the well-being of the community. I look forward to more young people taking up public duties and volunteering to serve both Hong Kong and the nation.
